The Grand Oriental Hotel (GOH) was constructed in 1837, and is located in the heart of the financial centre of Colombo Fort, overlooking the harbour.
The Grand Oriental Hotel, also known as the Taprobane for sometime, was most popular not only with ships' passengers but also with the Colombo City Residents, as the Hotel had acquired a reputation for ballroom dancing. The Grand Oriental crockery and furniture was a collectors item and adopted for fashionable use as GOH plates and GOH chairs. The hotel continues to offer traditional charm and superb service for which the Grand Oriental was always famous throughout its history.
